If there was one job, other than possibly taxidermy, that I would totally avoid is working in the sewer industry. The idea of finding a live cat combines these two concepts and pretty much gives all of us a gross visual in the old cranium.
Those drains and toilets have a tendency to catch some pretty gross stuff but then again, you’d be surprised on some of the top stuff they find.
The guys from Roto-Rooter fished out a $7000 dollar ring from an embarrassed woman who gave the guys a big tip. Gives new meaning to flushing “money” down the toilet. Another worker found a set of teeth. The owner said he planned to use them again assuring the workers he would “give them a good cleaning.” A woman in Germany went as far as chopping her husband up and flushing him down the toilet.
She was caught but still … that takes some dedication.
Probably the biggest myth about sewers is the alligator-down-the-drain concept. But it’s not as big of a falsehood that you would think. Florida has several reports of alligators wandering around the sewers. Of course the myths had alligators terrorizing the city of Manhattan.
Sewer workers have found a plethora of things. Sometimes you have to delve through the … uh-hum … waste to find a treasure.
Or someone’s teeth.
