Implosion, Explosion, Blowing Things Up - Building Demolition Videos

Posted 3/13/2008 10:55 am by Stephanie Sturgis and Andrew Sorcini

Who doesn’t like to see things blow up?

Come on admit. From the time we were whippersnappers planted on the couch in front of the TV, we’ve craved explosions. Think about all the Warner Bros. cartoons featuring Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner. Nothing made your pupils dilate more than that cartoon varmint standing next to a detonation device with TNT stamped on the side of it. When the plunger was pushed down, the excitement level elevated to Code Red.

Why do you think the Today show, CNN and all the local news outlets all rush to air the latest video clip of a building being deconstructed in a matter of seconds? We crave that blast.

For all of you who like to blow stuff up, check this out. How about links to 16 videos of structures collapsing in huge clouds of dust (and in one case water)?

The list includes big extravaganzas from Vegas when old traditional casinos were imploded to make room for new gambling halls. We all know Sin City has to go over the top and add a little showmanship to the event. The demolition, in both Nevada cases, is preceded by fireworks.

Here’s one of the Vegas destructions.

The 16 videos includes a nuclear tower coming down in pretty impressive fashion, a low-tech version that features a burly guy with a sledgehammer and little fear for his own life, lots of cheering crowds, some clean-up shots and plenty of big bangs. There’s even this one of a building that refuses to go down. It makes me wonder if the guy who draws the short straw will have to go in and add more explosives in order to finish the job.

For a little variety, let’s throw in an impressive clip of a bridge taken out in Rhode Island.

All this reverse construction should make Bob the Builder weep tears of sadness. “We can un-do it!!!”Image: How Stuff Works

    Annoying Kids Get Their Payback

Posted 5/08/2008 1:29 pm by Stephanie Sturgis

What’s more annoying than a cutesy kid on a Hummel figurine?
How about annoying kids in real life.
They run around like maniacs while their parents are often oblivious to the distractions and mayhem their “little darlings” are causing whether it’s during a concert or ceremony, at restaurants and stores or just in the neighborhood.
    Sometimes these brats […]

    Bringing The Noise With Toys

Posted 5/07/2008 1:07 pm by Stephanie Sturgis

I’m still a kid at heart.
I love me some toys. Among the clutter on my desk is a hula dog bobble head, some Simpsons stuff and an old Pee Wee Herman “action figure.”
So imagine my delight when I ran across a woman who combines toys to create “music.”
Yep, Kitty Clark has some creative notions and […]

Kinder, Gentler Grand Theft Auto 4

Posted 5/05/2008 9:32 am by Stephanie Sturgis

Unlike classic video games which people search high and low on the Internet to find, certain video games get a bad rap.

You shoot a few people, including some cops, steal some cars, boats and planes or blow up some stuff and suddenly you’re the scourge of the gaming world.
The Grand Theft Auto game series has […]

    Boomerangs in Space

Posted 5/01/2008 1:06 pm by Stephanie Sturgis

What’s that goofy saying from the 70s?

“If you love something, set it free. If it belongs to you, it will come back to you.”
    Something like that.
So I’m guessing people who throw boomerangs really believe that.
These are also the folks who were curious about what happens to a boomerang when it’s thrown in zero gravity.
    Japanese astronaut […]

    The Subway Survival Kit

Any good motorist has some emergency supplies in their car.  Even most of us bad motorists carry around extra oil, radiator fluid, and a spare tire.  If you’re prepared, you’ll have a pry bar, maybe a flashlight or some flares, and even a spare blanket.  Even if you don’t have any of that stuff, you’ve […]

8 Sports Designed For Your Dog

Posted 4/25/2008 4:45 am by AJ Star

The Air Bud movies, despite how seemingly useless all of the sequels have been, have taught us one thing: dogs are super athletic. They love sports, they are good at sports, and we should let them play sports.
But first they will need a selection of athletic events to choose from. Thankfully, Mental Floss blog has […]

Darth Vader Beats Up His Neighbors

I’ve tried to wrap my mind around the fanboys and geeks who spend hours recreating meticulous costumes and performing scenes from their favorite movies.

    I’ll admit I don’t get it.
But I certainly appreciate when these guys go so far over the top that the cops have to be called in.
That happened in the UK when […]

Who wasn’t mesmerized the first time they saw R2D2 beam out a version of Princess Leia begging Obi Wan for help?
Come on. Admit it. That was pretty cool. Especially if you saw the movie on the big screen back in 1977.
The hologram has advanced pretty far since then and now LM3Labs has come up with […]

The Awful Truth About the World of Blogging

Posted 4/23/2008 5:29 am by AJ Star

Earlier this month, the New York Times published an article about the dangerous world of blogging after two men died–one from a heart attack and one from a massive coronary.
Writer Matt Richtel chalked it up to stress from the demands of blogging. I am not at liberty to say whether or not I agree with […]

Naked Bird = World’s Ugliest Bird

Poor Oscar has every right to be a grouch.
The cockatoo named Oscar has a disease which deforms its feathers. The deformity results in an irritation to the skin and the miserable bird plucks out its own plumage to find relief.
The Humane Society of Broward County in Florida is home to the funky “chicken.” The disease […]
