Ch-ch-changes: The Evolution Of Your Favorite Websites

Posted 3/24/2008 9:39 am by Ron Hogan and Andrew Sorcini

large-apple-10.jpg

It’s amazing when you think about just how long the Internet has been a part of our daily lives, and just how much web content delivery formats have changed. Yet, not everything has changed wildly. Some of your favorite websites, early adopters to the online revolution, haven’t really changed that much in the last 10 years. Take a trip on the Wayback Machine and check out how some popular websites have evolved. Sorry about the David Bowie in the title; I got carried away.

I love stuff like this. One of my favorite things to do is hop onto the Internet Archives to check out old sites I used to write for and see how they’ve changed since I left or since I closed them. It’s amazing how little websites like CNN or Amazon have actually changed. Yahoo is still using the same logo they used when they started!

I guess if you get the design right the first time, you don’t really need to update, other than to take advantage of high speed cable modems, of course. That’s the big driver of changes online. Now that it doesn’t take 30 minutes for a minute-long video to load, you can have more fancy stuff on your website.

    Friday The 13th-Inspired Fashion

Posted 11/18/2009 8:00 am by Ron Hogan

Fashion designer Marc Ecko’s designs draw from a variety of inspirations, but there’s nothing as cool as his Black Rhino clothing articles.  After all, the Black Rhino collection is the home of the incredibly awesome Black Rhino Jason Hoodie, inspired by Jason Voorhees and the classic 80’s slasher movies in the Friday the 13th series.  […]

Hungry Hungry Hippos Maul Crocodile Invader

Posted 11/17/2009 8:45 am by Ron Hogan

In some ways, the biggest mistake you’ll ever make is your last one.  That’s what a crocodile in Tanzania found out when he confronted a group of hippos in the River Mara.  The creature approached the group of hippos, but when they formed up defensive ranks to protect their babies, for some unknown reason, he […]

Skin Implants, Corset Piercings, And Split Tongues

Posted 11/17/2009 7:00 am by Ron Hogan

Throughout history, there’s been one constant.  People are going to do whatever they can to make themselves more beautiful.  Whether it’s a tattoo of an Internet superstar like Tay Zonday, a tooth tattoo, an eyeball coloration, or even an amputation disguise, there’s no shortage of ideas on what people can do to the body to […]

    Filthy Computers

Posted 11/16/2009 11:30 am by Ron Hogan

The Register says they have assembled the world’s best gallery of the world’s filthiest computers.  That might not be hyperbole, as I don’t think I’ve ever seen a computer infested with spiders or with dead mice inside.  These images are truly impressive examples of how not to keep a computer in good working order.  Also, […]

    Light-Up LED Dress

Posted 11/16/2009 9:30 am by Ron Hogan

As lights get smaller and more powerful, you’re going to start seeing them in more and more places.  For example, check out the Galaxy Dress from CuteCircuit.  This formal-style gown made of crinoline, chiffon, 4,000 Swarovski crystals, and 24,000 LEDs is a pretty impressive combination of form and function.  Assuming you want to function as […]

    Spectacular Print Ads

Posted 11/13/2009 12:30 pm by Ron Hogan

There’s nothing quite as effective as a good visual.  If you’re trying to sell something, you need a hook to make your ad memorable, and the thing that tends to stick in my mind best is a really cool image.  That’s what makes these awesome advertisement images so effective.  They’re effective enough so that you’ll […]

Replica Pan-Am Plane Built In Garage

Air travel is a lot of fun, but the process of dealing with the airport, waiting in line to get on the plane, getting through airport security, packing, dealing with annoyed travelers, waiting around with no wifi, and all the other stuff that happens before you get on the airplane is kind of a drag.  […]

The Fall Of The Berlin Wall

Posted 11/09/2009 9:30 am by Ron Hogan

Twenty years ago today, on November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall came down.  The wall, separating East and West Berlin, was a symbol of the Cold War between the free world and the Soviet Union.  Google has a great selection of images from Life Magazine detailing the history of the wall, and there’s also a […]

Seven Wonders Of The Russian World

Posted 11/09/2009 9:00 am by Ron Hogan

The Berlin Wall fell 20 years ago, yet the land of Russia remains a mysterious and strange place to most Americans.  I mean, we all hear about the funny stereotypical drunk Russian stories, and we’ve seen a couple of weird statues from there, but there’s a whole other world to Russia that remains underrepresented.  For […]

    The UK’s Tallest Schoolgirl

Posted 11/05/2009 10:15 am by Ron Hogan

From the outside, Emma Cahill looks like your average school girl.  She just turned 16 and attends St Mary’s Convent School in Worcester, England.  She is active in sports and has many friends, but there’s one thing different about Emma.  At 6′5, she is the tallest teenage girl in the UK.
Fortunately for Emma, her unusual […]

    Bald Bespectacled Bears

Posted 11/04/2009 10:15 am by Ron Hogan

We’ve seen a lot of unusual animals with odd medical problems, like the naked penguin and the world’s ugliest bird.  While both those critters are pathetic in their own way, there’s nothing quite as sad (in a silly way) as the plight of poor Dolores and the other spectacled bears of Leipzig, Germany, who are […]

Cool Costumes At The ING New York Marathon

Posted 11/03/2009 2:34 pm by Ron Hogan

The New York Marathon ran this weekend.  Surprisingly, the winner was an American; in fact, Eritrea-born Meb Keflezighi is the first American citizen to win the marathon since 1982 (the year after I was born).  However, with an estimated 42,000 runners in the marathon this year, not all of them are hardcore professionals.  There are […]

China Causes Snow Storm To Fight Drought

Posted 11/02/2009 9:15 am by Ron Hogan

In its battle with nature, the Chinese government has once again decided to meddle in forces they do not understand.  They spent most of the time leading up to the Olympics seeding clouds to make it rain and lower pollution, and now to fight an unseasonable slate of dry weather, they’ve decided to take to […]
