Nuclear waste and art are rarely combined in the same sentence.
However, a storage facility for nuclear waste in the Netherlands is bringing a new approach to the problem.
The Habog Facility has been painted a bright orange and is covered with giant equations to capture the attention of passersby. Inside the building, in addition to the radioactive refuse, are four paintings and the facility is open for tours. The award-winning design and tours are an effort to better educate the public about nuclear waste management.
To symbolize the reduction in radioactivity, every 20 years the building will be painted a lighter color.
The huge orange building is just a testament to how far perceptions about nuclear energy have changed since the Cold War’s hidden cities in the Soviet Union.
