You never know what the Japanese will turn into a hobby or a fad.
Everything from key chains that sound like bubble wrap popping when you press on them to canoes made from chop sticks can capture the attention of the Japanese.
The latest fads there are items made by prisoners in prison.
In kitchens and bars and out onto the city streets, the hot gear to be wearing features the Japanese character for “jail” and the word “prison” spelled out in English printed on them.
Aprons, tote bags and pouches carrying the designs have been the big sellers. The items were originally offered for sale as souvenirs for visitors to the prisons, but gained popularity when they went on sale in an outlet store in Tokyo.
I guess it’s a lot cooler to wear the gear outside the prison walls than inside them.
KOMO News in Seattle has more details.
