Yves Rossy, Rocket Man, Postpones His Death For Another Day

Posted 9/25/2008 10:00 am by Ron Hogan

yves-rossy.jpgWhile the Chinese astronauts on board the Shenzhou VII are currently in flight towards the stars, in Calais, France, another intrepid adventurer has pushed back risking death for another dayYves Rossy, a professional pilot for SwissAir by day and a daredevil by night, has invented something he calls a Jet Wing.  Basically, it’s a little wing with jets on it that you strap onto your back and direct by using your head and back to steer it.  Rossy had planned on leaping out of an airplane over Calais, unfurl his carbon wings, and then fly across the English Channel before hopefully landing in Dover.  Unfortunately, due to bad weather, he’ll be trying his insane stunt tomorrow instead.

When announcing his cancellation, Rossy told assembled reporters, “I only have one life.”  That’s very true.  It kind of makes me wonder why you’re risking your life to fly your homemade jetpack at 125 miles an hour across 22 miles of bad water!  You’re already the first person to build and fly a jet-powered wing!  What more do you want?!

It must be a lot of fun to be completely insane.

If you’re having the symptoms of the swine flu, you’re going to have to take more precaution than you realized.  This time, instead of just worrying about your human family members, you have to worry about your pets, too.  In this case, a 13-year-old cat in Iowa has caught swine flu from two of the […]

    Casino Denies Jackpot To Winner

Posted 11/04/2009 2:07 pm by Ron Hogan

There’s one thing that’s fun about slot machines.  You put money into them, lights flash and bells ring, and if you’re lucky, you’re a winner and money clinks noisily into the winnings slot.  Most of the time, you don’t get anything but the lights and noise, but Bill Seebeck hit the jackpot.  Literally and figuratively.  […]

Happy Birthday Big Bird! Welcome To Middle Age!

Posted 11/04/2009 9:15 am by Ron Hogan

Television changed 40 years ago, because Sesame Street first hit the airwaves.  Well, technically, November 10, 1969 was the first day that a gigantic yellow bird and his motley crew of assorted monsters, blind people, and general hangers-on first appeared on televisions around the nation, but this date is close enough for government work (or […]

One Key Mutation Separates Humans From Apes

Posted 11/04/2009 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

Humans and chimpanzees, from a genetic standpoint, are first cousins.  The difference between the two from a DNA standpoint is only like 1.2 percent of genetic material; all our other DNA is exactly the same.  It’s those few simple mutations, some of which are less than 5 million years old, that separate us from the […]

A 35-mile long crack in the Earth’s surface, somewhere in the remote Afar desert of Ethiopia, will eventually become a new ocean.  Unfortunately for the drought-starved Ethiopians, it won’t become an ocean tomorrow.  No, it’s a slow process that will take millions of years, but it will become an ocean one day.
    So what’s so special […]

Normally, Virgin England is a metal crafter.  He makes fantasy and exotic knives and blades, like the kind you see sold on late-night shopping infomercials, but significantly better because his are made of real bone, leather, and Damascus steel (even exotic materials like fossils and ray skin) rather than pot metal and vinyl.   However, […]
