In 14 Hundred And 92, Columbus Sailed The Ocean Blue

Posted 10/13/2008 9:30 am by Ron Hogan

columbus.jpegHappy Columbus Day, everyone!  If you’re anything like me, Columbus Day is a holiday that means basically nothing to you except for the fact that you can’t go to the post office or swing by the bank.  Where I live, schools remain open on Columbus Day, so it’s not even a real holiday and probably never has been in my lifetime.  But hey, if you’re in New York City, you can always join the 35,000 marchers in this year’s Columbus Day Parade.

If you’re not in New York, you can do what I’m going to do.  Celebrate Christopher Columbus by watching one of Hollywood director Chris Columbus’s family-friendly movies (he did the first two Harry Potter films, among others).  After the kids go to bed, pop on the flick 1492:  Conquest of Paradise for Ridley Scott’s take on the whole Columbus experience.  Alternately, you could watch the horrible Christopher Columbus:  The Discovery if you want to learn to hate the guy who accidentally put America on the maps of Europe.

You know, his achievement has become pretty commonplace these days, but we should all strive to remember just how hard it is to be the first person to explore something.  After all, even in modern times exploring environments is very risky.  Just ask the first guys to explore Antarctica.

Meh: From The Simpsons To The Dictionary

Posted 11/18/2008 3:36 pm by Ron Hogan

The Simpsons, now tied with Gunsmoke for the longest-running prime time program in American history, has had an incredible impact on popular culture.  They’ve been on every kind of promotional piece of merchandise ever made, have had a hit movie, and have not one, but two words in the dictionary.  D’oh made the cut and […]

Tanya Vlach is looking to turn a horrible accident into a unique documentary opportunity.  Vlach, an artist from San Francisco, lost an eye in a car wreck.  Instead of a standard glass eye or a killer pirate eye patch, she’s looking to spice things up and get herself a webcam-capable eyeball.
    She’s got a whole list […]

The Pregnant Man Is Pregnant Again!

Posted 11/13/2008 3:51 pm by Ron Hogan

Remember Thomas Beatie?  He made a splash everywhere when he announced that, despite having become a man via sex change, he was legitimately pregnant.  Well, the pregnant man is back, and he’s pregnant again.
After Beatie gave birth to his daughter Susan on June 29, Thomas never resumed the male hormone treatments that turned him from […]

Surfing Mice (Or Stuart Little 3)

Posted 11/13/2008 10:24 am by Ron Hogan

Geraldo is unable to handle the big waves. We’ve all seen the evidence of that, but he didn’t have Shane Wilmott teaching him. If the Aussie can teach mice to surf, he can teach anyone (or anything) to ride the waves. Maybe even me!
Now, I know you’re looking at the picture above, […]

Google is just an unstoppable octopus of helpfulness these days.  If you’re a webmaster, you know all about Google Analytics, which tracks your website’s performance, and Google Trends, which tracks general internet things of interest.  There’s also Google’s advertising network AdSense, the Google Android smart phone OS, the Google Chrome web browser, and all the […]

    Salute Your Veterans Today

Posted 11/11/2008 1:54 pm by Ron Hogan

November 11 is a special day throughout the Western world.  In Europe, the date is known as Armistice Day, which commemorates the cessation of hostilities in World War I (and the groundwork for hostilities in World War II).  In Great Britain and the Commonwealth, the date is celebrated as Remembrance Day, dedicated to the sacrifices […]

    In Praise Of The Stick

Posted 11/07/2008 1:53 pm by Ron Hogan

In the Toy Hall of Fame Class of 2008, there’s a heavy emphasis on the power of a child’s imagination.  Of the three inducted toys, only one of them has a specific purpose.  That would be the skateboard.  The other two, the baby doll and the stick, are all about exercising the brain, rather than […]

Coffee: To Drink Or Not To Drink?

Posted 11/06/2008 2:01 pm by Ron Hogan

Miss Cellania asks:  “To drink or not to drink?”  That is question.  Coffee has a lot of potential health benefits for those of us who indulge in a bit of the black brew from time to time, but it also has a lot of potential health risks associated with its consumption.  The wise owls over […]

Unusual Presidential Pets Or The Gator In The West Wing

President-Elect Barack Obama made waves when, in his victory speech, he told his two daughters Sasha and Malia that they would indeed be getting a Presidential puppy.  While it is kind of unusual to use a major speech to buy your daughters a dog, there have been Presidential pets as long as there have been […]

It’s kind of sad that in the United States, people feel the need to bribe others for doing their civic duty and voting in the November 4 Presidential Election. Of course, this is a country where people are thrilled if over 50 percent of the eligible voters bother to show up and cast a ballot, […]
