We’ve discussed Robert Scott’s abandoned camp in the Antarctic before, but little did I know that Antarctica is literally full of abandoned buildings, ships, and even entire towns. It also has more ghosts per resident than anywhere else in the world, if you believe Dark Roasted Blend’s awesome article and image gallery about the ghosts that haunt the ice flows and the ghost towns that contain them. I’ve always wanted to go to Antarctica, just to hang out with penguins and be really cold, but now I want to go and take a ghost tour, too!
The most notable town that was abandoned was Grytviken, on South Georgia. Before the Great Depression, it was home to over 2000 people in seven different communities. Now it’s home to tourists and buildings like that gorgeous old church you see above you. Apparently people still come and take care of the buildings to prevent wilderness from completely overtaking things, but in such a cold environment, everything stays preserved longer.
