Six Animals That Rule The World ‘Wild’ Web

Posted 12/24/2008 11:04 am by Ron Hogan

badgers.jpgWe’ve seen our share of wild (literally and figuratively) animals here at PopFi, because animals are usually pretty popular.  They can be cute, they can be funny, they can be weird, or they can be any number of things.  All of the adjectives you can use to describe animals only serve to underscore the simple fact that animals are always interesting.  They’re the backbone of the Internet, and here are six of the animal trailblazers in the online world.

Some of these I had completely forgotten about.  Pancake Bunny and Dramatic Chipmunk/Prairie Dog are still everywhere, especially if you’re active in any online forums.  The LOLrus is a rock star.  But some of these are blasts from the past.

Most people got their first exposure to weird Internet memes via the Hamster Dance.  I know I did; I had honestly forgotten all about it.  I don’t think I’ve ever even seen Viking Kittens, so that’s one I’ll have to look up.  It’s been around since 2002, but I must have missed it for the last 6 years.  I still love Badgers Badgers Badgers.

The day before Christmas is a pretty dead day at most workplaces, unless you work in retail, so head on over to the PopFi archives and click around for awhile.  It’s a great, work-safe way to spend some quality time with the Internet.

Miss England In Beauty Queen Brawl

Posted 11/06/2009 12:15 pm by Ron Hogan

Rachel Christie is quite an accomplished young woman.  Or she was, anyway.  At age 21, not only is she in training for the 2012 London Olympics as a heptathlete, she also found some time on her days off to become the first black winner of the Miss England competition.  However, while she might still represent […]

    Women’s Soccer Is Surprisingly Violent

Posted 11/06/2009 11:45 am by Ron Hogan

There’s an old adage that describes soccer (football) as a gentleman’s game played by ruffians and rugby as a ruffian’s game played by gentlemen.  That’s never more true than when the gentlemen playing the game are ladies.  Take, for example, the supremely thuggish antics of Elizabeth Lambert, a 21-year-old defender on the New Mexico Lobos […]

2009 Toy Hall Of Fame Inductions

Posted 11/06/2009 9:17 am by Ron Hogan

The 2009 inductees for the National Toy Hall of Fame have been announced, and this year’s class of honorees is the direct opposite of last year’s class.  Where the 2008 version required a lot of imagination to wring the most fun out of them, 2009’s hall of fame class requires a lot less thinking and […]

    “Magic Mountain” Military Bunker

Posted 11/06/2009 8:57 am by Ron Hogan

It’s one of the most remarkable buildings of its kind in the world.  Built in 1989 and opened months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Cold War-era nuclear bomb shelter known around Alconbury Royal Air Force base as “Magic Mountain” is one of the most impressively damage-resistant structures in the world.  Due to […]

Cop Turned Raconteur’s Alligator Attack Story

Posted 11/06/2009 7:00 am by Ron Hogan

After 13 years on the police force, Terry Ashe has seen and experienced a lot of crazy things.  However, he hasn’t lost his sense of humor, or his ability to tell an appropriately lurid tale.  When his police cruiser was bitten by an angry alligator (apparently this is a common problem in Florida), he could’ve […]

The Large Hadron Collider Is Very Fragile

Posted 11/06/2009 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

The Large Hadron Collider, once thought to have the power to destroy the world, isn’t turning out to be much of a threat.  After all, in order to destroy the world, the machine has to actually be active and functioning, and apparently the scientists at CERN can’t keep the thing together and running properly.  First […]

Missing Baby Discovered In Cedar Chest

Posted 11/05/2009 2:20 pm by Ron Hogan

Any time a baby goes missing, a big manhunt breaks out.  Fortunately for 7-month-old Shannon Lea Dedrick, her story has a happy ending.  Unfortunately for Shannon’s mother, Chrystina Lynn Mercer, and babysitter, Susan Elizabeth Brown, the baby’s happy ending will probably get them both jail time.  Shannon was reported missing on Saturday, and was discovered […]

Clear Out Of The Kitchen, Woman!

Posted 11/05/2009 11:18 am by Ron Hogan

The idea of men in the kitchen, to a lot of people, is high comedy.  I mean, on TV sitcoms, Dad is always burning dinner or screwing up somehow.  However, in the real world, Dad is just as capable of turning on the oven and opening up some canned vegetables as Mom is, and today […]

Living Man Shows Up For His Own Funeral

Posted 11/05/2009 9:30 am by Ron Hogan

It was a scene worthy of the great Mark Twain; indeed, it was a crucial moment in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer!  A case of mistaken identity allowed a Brazilian man named Ademir Jorge Goncalves to make an appearance at a very unlikely event:  his own funeral.  It’s like something out of a Coffin Joe […]

First-Time Metal Detector Finds Ancient Treasure

Posted 11/05/2009 8:45 am by Ron Hogan

Matthew Booth never thought his first trip out with a metal detector would find anything of real value.  Maybe some coins or old bottle caps, if he’s lucky.  Little did he know that when his machine started beeping in a field outside of Stirlingshire, Scotland, that he’d uncovered a rare and valuable treasure trove.  Booth’s […]

If you’re having the symptoms of the swine flu, you’re going to have to take more precaution than you realized.  This time, instead of just worrying about your human family members, you have to worry about your pets, too.  In this case, a 13-year-old cat in Iowa has caught swine flu from two of the […]

    Casino Denies Jackpot To Winner

Posted 11/04/2009 2:07 pm by Ron Hogan

There’s one thing that’s fun about slot machines.  You put money into them, lights flash and bells ring, and if you’re lucky, you’re a winner and money clinks noisily into the winnings slot.  Most of the time, you don’t get anything but the lights and noise, but Bill Seebeck hit the jackpot.  Literally and figuratively.  […]
