Quirk Books, the genius book company who developed the idea behind Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, are trying their hand at reinvigorating another 19th Century novel by the mistress of manners, Jane Austen. More zombies? Hardly! That’s been done already. Try Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters on for size.
I for one could care less what they add to Jane Austen books. I can’t wait for Emma And The Invaders From Outer Space, Mansfield Park Meets Jack The Ripper, or (my favorite idea) The Creature From Northanger Abby. Considering what horrors have been done to Shakespeare, making Jane Austen’s books better seems less offensive than it might have twenty years ago.
I really hope this isn’t some kind of hoax. If it is, then Quirk needs to make this book happen anyway because the concept and delivery is absolutely brilliant. There’s a release date in the video of September 15, 2009, but I can’t find it for sale on Amazon yet. I’ve got my fingers (or should that be squid tentacles) crossed for this one, as it looks to be even more fun than Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was.
