I love getting a glimpse at how things work. Ever since Sony won the format war, I’ve been wondering just why Blu-ray discs are A) so expensive and B) require so much special equipment to manufacture. Wouldn’t a disc be a disc no matter how the files are stored on it? Well, if you take a glimpse behind the curtain and explore the Blu-ray factory in Huntingwood, Australia to see how things are done, you can see what makes Blu-ray discs so expensive to purchase and so tough to churn out.
Maybe things are similar behind the scenes at your average DVD factory, I don’t know. To me, it seems like an awful lot of work and an awful lot of special precautions to keep from fouling up the discs. The victor, in this case Sony, deserves all the spoils for out-spending rivals and turning HD-DVD into BetaMax.
