It’s not every day that you find yourself in the middle of a natural disaster, but that’s where I was today. My place of employment was ground zero for the worst of the flash flooding that hit wide swaths of Louisville, Kentucky today. Up to six inches of rain fell in the city in a period of three hours, and shortly after that was more rain in a second storm. It’s been a real mess here, with lots of people out of power, lots of damage, the University of Louisville flooding so deeply people had to be rescued by boat, the main branch of the library suffering thousands of dollars in flood damage, and even helpless animals drowned while in the custody of the Metro Animal Shelter thanks to the rush of water.
I dug out my cell phone camera and got a few good pictures of the flooding in my area today.
This car had about four inches of water inside it.
The water, at its deepest point, was probably four feet deep.
That white car stalled out in the middle of the raging rapids? A Mercedes. Fortunately, after the water receded, the driver was able to start it back up and drive it away. Must be a combination of German engineering and plain dumb luck!
These photos weren’t even taken when the water was at its highest. Before the rain had stopped this morning, the water was up to the bottom of the lights on that stalled Mercedes, maybe even a little higher. How it was able to be driven away a few hours later I’ll never know. Why the driver thought she could make it through three feet of water I’ll also never know. Fortunately, like in another engineering disaster involving water, nobody was hurt.
