Al Fischer is a hero. It’s not due to his job (he’s a print shop operator) or because he did some random act of heroism like save a child from a cougar. No, Al is a hero in a way in which pretty much anyone can be a hero: he donates blood. Not just once or twice, Al donates at least six times a year and, at age 75, he’s about to give his 40th gallon of blood. Forty gallons is 320 pints! As it turns out, Al has given blood for the past 58 years, but he’s not even the highest donor on record in New York!
I have never donated blood. Personally, I’m terrified of needles, and the act of giving blood at the hospital or doctor’s office is enough for me. Even there, I hate the process and the nurses have always commented that it’s hard to get blood out of me because I tense up so badly. I can only imagine how badly I’d freeze up at a blood drive or on the blood donation bus surrounded by other people laughing, talking, and enjoying orange juice and cookies.
