You know, I’ve always kind of liked Patrick Swayze, despite myself. I mean, between Dirty Dancing and Ghost, I really shouldn’t. But he did make Road House and Red Dawn, two of my all-time favorite movies ever, and he was also in the clinically insane Point Break (one of the best bad movies in history and an early precursor to the extreme sports trend). How odd that he made both some of the best romances and some of the best action movies ever made, huh? Not to mention a couple of really good dramatic turns in Donnie Darko and his TV series The Beast. He fought the good fight, but Swayze succumbed to cancer today at the age of 57.
I think the thing I liked most about Patrick Swayze was the way he was willing to poke fun at his own image. After all, he was the star of one of the most famous Saturday Night Live skits in history, his dance-off with the late Chris Farley (another person I love). He fought the good fight against cancer, didn’t he? Having survived as long as he did is a testament to his toughness.
