Bears are pretty awesome, aren’t they? In the wild, they’re one of the most human-like animals because they use their environment, walk on their hind legs, and even fish. However, if you’re dealing with a bear that has been raised in captivity, they didn’t have the mother bear around to teach them important survival skills, so if you want that bear to learn how to swim, there’s only one way to do it. Get yourself a swimming pool and teach that bear to swim. That’s what Casey Anderson did for his beloved pet bear Brutus.
Needless to say, the pair drew quite a crowd. Brutus is 800 pounds, after all. Not every day you go outside and catch a bear going for a dip in your pool, even if you do live in the heart of Montana’s grizzly country. However, if you have access to National Geographic’s television specials, be on the lookout for “Expedition Kodiak,” expected to premier next year. It traces Brutus’ journey from pet born in captivity to full-fledged grizzly with all the grizzly skills.
