Poor Roberta the hen has a dubiously impressive accomplishment to add to her resume, but it had a high cost. The hen spent a day or two feeling and acting ill, but farmer Chris Schauerman made sure to keep an eye on her. Sure enough, something was going on with Roberta, and that something was a giant egg. For those not in the know, like myself, Roberta’s 5-ounce egg is about 1.5 times as large as a normal egg, or the equivalent of a human giving birth to a 25-pound baby.
Mothers out there have trouble enough with normal-sized children, but giant babies are definitely more stressful. As for Roberta’s egg, dubbed Little Roberta, it’s going to meet a fitting end. It won’t be made into an Easter egg, but will instead become Mr. Schauerman’s breakfast after a brief period of entertaining school children.
I wonder how big of an omelette you could make out of a giant egg?
