Generally, most publicans have no problem with having a ghost around. A haunted pub is always a really good business draw. However, publican Janice McCormack, who runs the Apsley House in Southsea, Hants with her husband Patrick, is in the market for a good exorcist. Her ghost, nicknamed Reedy after famous actor Oliver Reed, isn’t a dangerous poltergeist. In fact, he might be too kind-hearted, because he keeps refilling customers’ glasses! Casper might be a friendly ghost, but he’s got nothing on Reedy!
As you might expect, customers who are the beneficiaries of Reedy’s generosity have no real desire to see him shipped off to another pub (or whever ghosts go after they’ve been cast out), but if the pub closes down, then they’d have to find somewhere else to drink. Surely there’s some way to find a happy medium (no pun intended).
Maybe Reedy can only top off a few drinks a day, or perhaps the bar can just lock up the stock a bit better when they’re not going to be actively attending to the drinks. Or you could put him on staff as a second tapkeeper on busy weekends! Someone else would have to mind the money, but can you imagine a bigger draw than a ghostly suds jockey?
