October is one of the greatest sporting months in the calendar. If you’re a sports fan/nerd like me, you don’t get much better than October. The NFL is in full swing. Baseball is rounding third base and heading towards the playoffs. Basketball training camps are opening up (the season is a month away). College football is wall to wall every Saturday. And, of course, the NHL season kicked off this weekend. Hockey’s not as big in America as it is in Canada, but there are still a lot of curious folks. If you’ve ever wondered what a Hab is, Mental Floss has your answer with the back stories of all 30 NHL franchise names.
While I’ve always been a casual hockey fan, I do have a favorite team. That would be the Pittsburgh Penguins, as pictured above on the chest of superstar Sidney Crosby. I fell for the team back in the old Mario Lemieux/Jaromir Jagr days and stuck with them, despite the fact I hate all of Pittsburgh’s other teams. It helps that I love the cute/goofy skating penguin logo.
