Former NBA star turned mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson just wanted to do a good deed. He was visiting San Francisco for a conference about the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts when he noticed an elderly man struggling to get in a taxi. Johnson, being a kind soul, decided to help the older gentleman get in the cab. By the time he turned back to his stuff, his bag had been stolen.
It’s not every day that a mayor gets robbed while visiting a new city. But a mayor who just happens to be a former gold medalist, three-time NBA All-Star, and five-time All NBA player? That’s pretty unusual for street crime. It’s not like he got mugged by a gang of Nixon impersonators or something, though.
For the record, Johnson didn’t lose much. The bag contained a suit and a pair of shoes, along with some personal items, but nothing of significant value. However, he did gain a great story to tell one of his fellow mayors: “Next time I see San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, I’ll tell him the story and give him my word nothing like that will happen to him in Sacramento, and I’ll hope I can make good on the promise.”
