What was intended to be harmless fun now has advocacy groups up in arms. The Midget Cup, a special publicity stunt designed to promote Australia’s Cranbourne Cup horse race, has raised hackles in the land of Oz because it features little people riding on the back of full-sized adults while dressed in jockey silks. Detractors compare it to exploitative events like dwarf tossing, but I honestly don’t see what the problem is. If anything, it’s exploiting big people, since they’re the ones being faux-whipped by their tiny riders.
Let’s be honest here, if a dwarf wants to dress up and ride a big person around, who am I to stop him? Would I do it if I was a dwarf? Probably; depends on what they’re paying me. Little people are free to make their own decisions. If they want to ride on my back for pay (assuming I want to carry one) or live in a theme park, then that’s their business.
It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.
