October, as you know, is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Of the many breast cancer survival stories, none are quite as remarkable as that of a rock and roll legend. Peter Criss, the man behind the Catman makeup in the original lineup of seminal hard rock band KISS, is a breast cancer survivor at age 63. Criss has been cancer-free for a year and is now one of two male celebrities using his fame and his experience with breast cancer to encourage men to be on the lookout. The other male breast cancer survivor is the star of many a great blaxploitation movie, Richard Roundtree of Shaft fame.
While breast cancer is still a big deal, it tends to be more fatal in men. Those same men, clueless about male breast cancer, often let their breast lumps go unchecked, thus allowing the cancer to spread. As Criss says in his interview, “Don’t sit around playing Mr. Tough Guy. Don’t say ‘It’s going to go away.’ It might not and you might not see life anymore and how beautiful that is.”
