Cool Costumes At The ING New York Marathon

Posted 11/03/2009 2:34 pm by Ron Hogan

eiffel-tower-marathon.jpg

The New York Marathon ran this weekend.  Surprisingly, the winner was an American; in fact, Eritrea-born Meb Keflezighi is the first American citizen to win the marathon since 1982 (the year after I was born).  However, with an estimated 42,000 runners in the marathon this year, not all of them are hardcore professionals.  There are also a lot of goofy people who show up to get attention and publicity.  Here’s the 25 best costumes at this year’s ING New York Marathon.

I can’t imagine anything harder than running a marathon, unless it’s running a marathon in a big rubber monster outfit.  I wonder just how many of these costumed heroes give up halfway through their runs, and how many of them manage to stagger across the finish line, soaked in sweat and trailing a stream of ragged spandex tights, crepe paper, and tattered cape behind them.

    Delicious Pepsi H1N1 For Sale!

Posted 2/08/2010 10:00 am by Ron Hogan

I know what you’re thinking.  Well, I know what I’m thinking, anyway.  “People still care about H1N1?”  Apparently so!  That’s why Walgreen’s Drug Stores are putting H1N1 in their drinks, snacks, and even their Buffalo wings.  It’s a sure-fire way to get people to pay up for an anti-H1N1 vaccine; you just have to poison […]

Posted 2/05/2010 8:00 am by Ron Hogan

It’s amazing just how popular Twitter has become.  It’s such a big deal that even astronauts use it!  Not only are they using it, they’re also using the power of Twitter and Twitpic to beam images of the Earth back from space!  Just check out io9’s gallery of Tweeted space photographs from Astronaut Jose and […]

The Strange Worlds Of Matthew Albanese

Posted 2/04/2010 10:00 am by Ron Hogan

It looks like a photograph of Mars, but it’s not.  That’s actually 12 pounds of cinnamon, charcoal, paprika, thyme, and chili powder artfully arranged into a harsh, desert landscape.  It’s one of the many strange worlds depicted by artist Matthew Albanese in his collection titled (appropriately enough) Strange Worlds.   Albanese uses everyday materials to […]

Predators, Prey Choose To Play Rather Than Fight

Posted 2/04/2010 7:30 am by Ron Hogan

Three young cheetahs on the prowl manage to separate a young impala, a deer-like member of the antelope family, from the rest of the herd.  I’ve watched enough nature shows to know what happens next, and I imagine phototographer Michel Denis-Huot knew what was supposed to happen next, too.  That little impala is destined to […]

    Pierced, Gothic Kittens

Posted 2/04/2010 7:00 am by Ron Hogan

Holly Crawford, a 35-year-old from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, had an unusual online business.  She sold kittens.  Lots of people sell kittens, so Holly differentiated herself via good marketing by picking up her piercing kit and marketing pierced, customized gothic kittens.  She used a 14-gauge needle, the likes of which are normally used on cattle, to do […]

    The Internet, In Graph Form

Posted 2/04/2010 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

Who doesn’t love a good infographic?  I know I do.  Whenever possible, I like to consume my information in chart or graph form.  Not only is it easier to read and make instant comparison, sometimes it comes in pie chart form, and that makes me think of consuming delicious pie alongside my delicious information.  For […]

Po The Viper Or A Smoking Snake

Posted 2/03/2010 8:30 am by Ron Hogan

Cigarettes are dangerous, but don’t tell that to Po.  After all, he’s addicted, so he won’t take kindly to your criticism, but more than that, Po is also a snake.  Even snakes can get addicted to cigarettes, apparently!  Apparently, Po picked up the habit because his owner, Sho Lau, has a 20 cig-a-day habit, and […]

    Frankenbears On The Loose

Some might call the subject of Kent Rogowski’s photography cute, but that’s before Kent has his way with them.  Kent’s photography book, Bears, contains a whole lot of pictures of stuffed teddy bears.  They’re a classic, even iconic, children’s plaything, so what better way to get some shock than to take a teddy bear and […]

Hercules, The Largest Living Cat On Earth

Posted 1/29/2010 9:00 am by Ron Hogan

See Hercules up there?  He’s yet another Guinness World Record holder.  In his case, he’s the largest living cat on earth, and a wonderful example of the principle of hybrid vigor (the principle behind the world’s largest housecat breed).  His father was a lion, and his mother was a tiger, which means Herc is a […]

Motorcycle Gets 214 Miles Per Gallon!

Posted 1/28/2010 10:00 am by Ron Hogan

It looks like some kind of futuristic travel pod, doesn’t it?  Well, it’s not.  Behind that aerodynamic shell is a simple Honda Wave Innova motorcycle that has been customized to get over 214 miles per gallon of fuel by velomobile designer Allert Jacobs.  Not only did his design make the vehicle more fuel conservative, it […]

    The Sphinxa Hut

Posted 1/27/2010 8:30 am by Ron Hogan

Pizza Hut delivers to the Pyramids.  It might sound funny, but it’s actually true.  The image you see there isn’t Photoshopped.  Giza, Egypt, has grown so great that it now encroaches on the location of the Great Pyramids, and that view you see is from the Pizza Hut that’s basically across the street.  Apparently, the […]

    The World’s Ugliest Endangered Fish

Posted 1/26/2010 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

It’s quite possibly the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a whole lot of ugly fish (and forced others to look at them, too).  However, the blobfish is in his own category.  Still, just because it’s a horridly ugly fish doesn’t mean it deserves to be fished to death, and right now poor […]

    50 States Of Equal Size

It’s one of those fascinating experiments that will never happen.  What if the United States was composed of states of equal size?  Well, it’d look like the map above.  Go here to see it in full view.   That’s 50 US states, all of which are roughly 5,617,000 people in population.  That means they would […]
