Attention students at Danvers High School in Danvers, Massachusetts. When you go to school you are entering a “No Meeping” zone. Anyone caught saying the word (or making the sound) meep, as made famous by the Road Runner and The Muppet Show’s Beaker, risks getting suspended. Danvers High principal Thomas Murry has banned meeping on the premises.
Why would a school ban a word? Apparently, students were conspiring online to do a mass, unified meeping. Why? Who knows why. Probably just to be annoying. Kids love to be obnoxious for no reason. The bigger question to me is what made these kids even aware of Beaker the Muppet, since the Muppet Show has been off the air completely since 2001 and original episodes haven’t been made since the year I was born (1981). I guess it’s all the Muppet movies and Muppet Babies that have kept Beaker alive.
In order to get to the bottom of the story, I called Beaker himself for an interview. When asked for his opinion on the meep ban, he said, “Meep. Meep-meep meep. Meep, me-me-meep, meepmeepmeepmeep.” Very strong words from this man of science.
