Margaret O’Callaghan had a need for a new type of kitchen utensil. The round-bottomed ladle and the spatula are just not good enough when you’re dealing with things like crock pots and serving dishes. That’s why she invented the scrudle, a combination ladle and spatula designed to scrape the deliciousness from any sort of cooking pot. Not only was I impressed with the scrudle; so were the folks at Finish laundry detergent, who awarded the 65-year-old homemaker with a £10,000 prize and a development deal with kitchen appliance manufacturer Lakeland.
It’s always the obvious inventions that seem to get the most attention. I mean, a flat ladle is a genius idea; aren’t you kicking yourself for not having thought of it first? Or if you have invented something like it in your home workshop, aren’t you mad you didn’t pitch it? It’s definitely better than scraping the bottom of the pot with a tablespoon, hoping to get the last of the chili out.
