Happy Thanksgiving from PopFi

Posted 11/26/2009 6:00 am by

the_first_thanksgiving_jean_louis_gerome_ferris.png

It’s Thanksgiving today, the quintessential American holiday that involves eating too much, watching too much football (both college and pro), and napping on the couch thanks to an overdose of tryptophan.  No celebration of Thanksgiving would be completely without actually giving thanks, and since this is my first Thanksgiving as owner and operator of PopFi, I figured I may as well be a little thankful.

First and foremost, I have to thank the people who started this site, and who worked so hard to get it off the ground before I even joined up.  Specifically Adams Briscoe, the guy who came up with the idea of the site and who worked tirelessly to get it up and running (and who still chips in to help me out when I’m having technical problems or when I need advice).  I’m grateful that you even saw fit to let me take over the ship before I bought it, buddy.

Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank the hardworking writing staff, all of whom are still hard at work at sites of their own.  So Trace (Newscoma), Steph (The Squirrel Queen), and AJ (Stalking With the Stars), thank you all for all the hours you put into the site, writing articles, finding stories, and generally busting your tails months before I joined the crew.   I’d also like to thank Andrew, RJ, and Liz for all their hard work back in the day.

Stephanie gets extra-special super-bonus thanks for keeping PopFi active and breathing, even after it seemed like the site was going to dry up.  Trace gets extra-special super-bonus thanks for pestering Adams until he hired me on as an extra writer.  Plus, they both get tons of gratefulness and a round of beer on me for being such good friends to me, and for their unflagging support.  I also owe thanks to friends like Jade, Kathy, Jaime, and lots of other people who I’m forgetting (sorry!) for sending me links to whatever weird stuff you find.  You guys are awesome.

You know who else is awesome?  You guys, the readers.  Every eyeball that comes across this site is super important and without you guys there’s no way I could possibly do this.  So thanks for reading, thanks for linking, thanks for Tweeting, and thanks for telling your friends.

For all those that celebrate it, have a happy Thanksgiving.  For those that don’t celebrate it, have a happy Thursday.  Posting will resume in earnest tomorrow, but now it’s time to gorge myself on turkey until I pass out.

Superprawn Fished Up In New Zealand

Posted 2/03/2012 7:30 am by

There are a lot of weird animals underwater.  Due to the pressure, temperatures, and various other factors, marine life can get to be pretty weird.  With that in mind, what’s weirder than a giant version of a normally small creature?  Nothing, that’s what.  Hence, the reaction when scientists captured an 11-inch prawn-like creature while on [...]

One of the biggest problems with doing a biography of any historical character is the fact that you have to separate fiction from fact, and in a lot of cases, the past can be a little bit blurry.  Well, if anyone can separate fact from fiction, or at least make the fiction as interesting as [...]

Posted 11/07/2011 6:00 am by

They say the devil is in the details, but they generally don’t mean that literally.  In the case of a fresco painted by Italian artist Giotto in the 13th Century, the devil literally is in the details.  Historians have discovered a devil face depicted in the clouds in a fresco depicting the life of St. [...]

Meet The Geep, A Goat/Sheep Hybrid

When it comes to animals, there’s nothing more interesting than a cross-bred hybrid animal.  Whether they are created, like the giant savannah cat, or accidents, like the zedonk, the liger, and the chupacabra, the end result is always interesting.  When Graeme Wallace bought a sheep farm in Taieri, New Zealand, he got a little more [...]

Sometimes, it seems like gorillas are from another planet.  They’re huge and fearsome and potentially dangerous, but they’re also capable of incredible sweetness and gentle behavior.  For example, when a lost baby duckling ended up in the gorilla enclosure in the Bronx Zoo in New York, visitors waited with bated breath to see what might [...]

See that horrible pink liquid in what looks like a normal Pepsi bottle?  Well, hold your nose for this story, because that’s a Pepsi that tastes like carbonated breakfast.  For once, turning something pink isn’t a breast cancer awareness thing; Pepsi Japan’s Pepsi Pink is actually a carbonated strawberry milk flavored take on Pepsi.  Seriously, [...]
