Digital archivist Jason “Textfiles” Scott thinks he’s found something with the image he’s discovered. It’s a picture of a laughing cat from the March 1929 edition of Parents’ Magazine featuring the caption “Ha Ha Ha, It must be so!” underneath the cute little kitty’s happy face. However, it is NOT the world’s first LOLcat. Not even close.
The world’s first LOLcat, as longtime PopFi readers knows, dates from 1904. It’s this cuddly little fellow (or lady), all dressed up in a poofy turn-of-the-century skirt and sitting in his high chair, hungrily and curiously wondering just what has delayed his or her dinner. What’s Delaying My Dinner Cat is a lot cuter than Nursery Cat, if only because Nursery Cat’s caption seems like some kind of megalomaniacal demand for obedience, whereas What’s Delaying My Dinner Cat is just a cutely pathetic little hungry kitty.
