Pity the poor Midwestern United States.  As you read this, they either are or will be buried beneath snow and buffeted by swirling, 50-mile-an-hour winds in what is the first serious winter blizzard of the 2009-10 cold season.   It’s going to be pretty bad, but it won’t be historically bad.  There’s definitely been worse, and Mental Floss is there to make the weather outside less frightful by reminding everyone of the 10 worst winter storms of all time.

I love snow, but I have my limits on just how much I love it.  Make the ground look pretty, maybe cancel schools and work for a day, and after that?  Go away.  I’m done with you and your road-ruining frozen whiteness.   When I was a kid it was fine, but now that I have to skate to work in the morning with black ice on the road and swirling snow obscuring my vision?  No thank you.
