Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is a controversial man. He owns half of Italy’s media properties, as well as the A.C. Milan football team, and is the longest-serving head of a G8 state. He has accomplished all this in spite of his many rude jokes, public relations blunders, a messy divorce and prostitution scandal, a lengthy history of criminal allegations, and being hit in the face by a model of a cathedral at a recent rally. The BBC has the full story and the shocking video.
Massimo Tartaglia, a 44-year-old man with a long history of mental illness, is the alleged attacker. Berlusconi suffered a broken nose and two broken teeth in the attack, and was admitted to the hospital to have his nose repaired. Berlusconi was signing autographs at a rally when the man snuck up on him and bashed him in the face with the model.
It’s amazing that you can get so close to the leader of a huge country, isn’t it? Especially given how wildly divided opinion is on Berlusconi’s rule. When I met President Clinton at a rally at my high school a few years ago, I was wanded down, patted down, and separated from the man by a barricade AND secret service agents. That mob scene Berlusconi waded into is a testament to his craziness and bravery.
