When Kang Wannian was out gathering freshwater clams near the tiny village of Mengla, Yunnan Province on the Chinese border with Laos, he spotted something unusual. It was a rare Indochinese tiger, one of only 1000 in all of Asia, and possibly the only one in China. He did what any reasonable person would do in that situation: he shot and killed the beast, then dragged it back to his village where he and four of his friends butchered and ate an endangered species.
Chinese officials weren’t pleased by this, and Kang has received an impressive 12 years in jail, along with a $70,000 fine. Only 10 of those years in jail were for killing and eating the tiger; the other two were for possession of an illegal weapon. After all, you don’t need a firearm to go digging for clams.
Kang maintains he shot the tiger in self-defense. As for why he ate it, well… would you leave a perfectly delicious dead animal laying around, going to waste? No way! How often are you going to get to eat an endangered species, anyway?
