Nicholas Welch, a 30-year-old man from Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, likes Marmite. That’s not unusual as a lot of Brits like Marmite. However, Welch loves the stuff so much that he keeps stealing it. From the same store, no less. Welch has undertaken four different raids on the Spar store inside his local Shell, taking a staggering 18 jars of Marmite! The serial thief has gotten a 12-month supervision order for his troubles.
So, I know there’s one question on every reading American’s mind: “What in the heck is Marmite?” Well, Marmite is a vegetable spread. Specifically, it’s a salty/savory beer yeast spread that’s sticky and very powerful in flavor. It’s a love it or hate it thing, hence Marmite’s slogan, “Love it or hate it.” Odds are, given my picky nature, I’d hate it. Then again, it’s supposedly similar to soy sauce, and I like soy. Hmm… I may have to contact my British friends for a little Marmite hook-up.
