The holiday sales numbers are starting to trickle in, and there’s one thing for sure: Amazon.com did incredibly well. In fact, among the many amazing feats this holiday season was that Amazon set a world record in terms of items bought. On December 13, 2009, the company sold a staggering 9.5 million items in a day. That’s 110 items every second! The company’s bragging press release is full of great factoids about how they sold enough jeans to clothe the entire Vancouver Winter Olympics and how all the computers sold via Amazon would stack up as high as Mount Everest, but the interesting news concerned the Kindle.
You know the Kindle. Amazon’s ebook reader was the company’s hottest-selling gift, taking the title of most gifted item in company history. They sold more Kindles than paper books. No wonder everyone wants in the ebook reader market! I don’t see how that could be possible, but they might be limiting it to new books bought via Amazon itself, not via a third party company or via the used book marketplace.
