As the asteroid Apophis approaches Earth, NASA isn’t worried. After all, their Near-Earth Orbits Project says the thing won’t come within 18,000 miles of hitting the Earth. It’s close in galactic terms, but absolutely nothing to worry about. Don’t tell that to the Russians. The Russian Space Agency’s head man, Anatoly Perminov, has already started preparing plans to sent a space shuttle into space to blow up the offending 885-foot hunk of rock. Just like Armageddon, but without the Aerosmith soundtrack!
You know, I’d laugh it off as just some paranoid delusion, but an asteroid hitting Earth could bring about the end of life as we know it. While it’ll probably never happen, it’s not a bad thing to have a prepared plan of attack for, either. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Or in this case a few pounds of nuclear explosive is better than a destroyed planet!
