As someone who absolutely loves sarcasm and who uses it pretty much constantly, I can tell you that the hardest thing you can do as a writer in the first person (as I am right now) is to convey sarcasm in text. I mean, sarcasm is so dependent on tone of voice and facial expression that it really requires some sort of indicator, either bold or italics or whatever. Thankfully, Sarcasm Inc. has stepped in to fill that void, creating the sarcasm mark. For $1.99, you too can be as sarcastic as you want and even your dumbest friend won’t get confused by it.
Said the company in a press release, “Statements have the period [full stop]. Questions have the question mark. Exclamations have the exclamation mark. When you see the newest punctuation mark for sarcasm, you’ll know the writer of that sentence doesn’t literally mean what they’re writing; they’re being sarcastic.” This is probably the biggest development in punctuation since the creation of the ampersand!
