It’s not that giant squid are all that rare off the coast of California. They’re not commonly caught, and definitely not commonly caught at this time of year, but they’re not unusual. Still, off the coast of Newport Beach, California, there’s been a run on giant Humboldt squid the likes of which local fisherman have never seen. They’re calling it a giant squid invasion, as fishermen are reeling them in by the hundreds every night!
Now the squid being reeled in aren’t record breakers; most of them are about 20-40 pounds, but fishermen don’t care. Some of them are coming for the challenge of reeling in the giant squid, which are notoriously difficult to reel in. Some of them are coming to try the delicacy, which is a fairly expensive meat. Others are just there to gawk at one of nature’s weirdest animals in the wild.
