In the movie Robocop 3, there’s a scene in which the bad guys are being chased by Robocop. In an attempt to get away from him, the head bad guy on the run grabs a sack full of cash and dumps it behind his speeding truck. Seeing this, a group of kids comes over and starts to pick up the money. This delays Robocop enough so the bad guys can get away. In a remarkably similar scene, $250,000 fell from the back of a truck in Whitehall, Ohio, a busy Columbus suburb. Half of that money is still missing.
The bank bag fell from the back of a Garda Cash Logistics truck heading to a cash processing facility. Police recovered $100,000 or so of the money, $12,000 has been returned so far, and at least another $100,000 remains at large. The cash drop caused a huge traffic snarl as people jumped from their cars to stuff their pockets with folding money.
Can’t say I blame them; if I saw a sack of cash fall from a bank truck, I’d be all over it, stuffing my pockets alongside them. However, police say people who picked up the money can face potential criminal charges if they don’t return it, and are poring over security camera footage from nearby businesses. So, yeah. If you see free money and pick it up, make sure you cover your face first.
