Apparently, you don’t have to be smarter than a fifth grader to make elementary school text books. After all, how else could you explain why the new math textbooks in both the Sacramento City and Folsom Cordova school districts contain some significant mistakes. The classes (the kids, not the teachers) have uncovered more than 90 errors in texts and related school materials supplied by textbook makers Macmillan/McGraw-Hill.
Among the most egregious errors is five times three equals five. That’s simple math, even for grade school kids! No matter what the explanation is from Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, it’s inadequate. The fact that the school board has to go negotiate with the publishers to fix these errors is laughable.
Those text books are still in classrooms, and will be for at least another two weeks (they’ve replaced the cheaper workbooks and have edited teacher materials that are online). This is going to cost someone an arm and a leg; then again, if scientists can’t do simple math, how can we expect kids to ever learn it?
