When Larry Platt sang the song “Pants on the Ground” during American Idol, it was more than just some goofy old fellow singing a song about the young people, it was a rallying cry for an entire movement. People have decried sagging, or the wearing of pants low enough to show off your underwear, since I was in middle school. That’s 15 years, which makes sagging probably the longest-lasting fashion ever. However, when I was a kid the pants were only a few inches lower, just low enough to show off the top of the boxers a la Marky Mark. Now kids show their whole butt, and Eric Adams wants to put a stop to it.
Adams, a state senator from Brooklyn, New York, has started the “Stop the Sag” campaign, imploring young men to pull their pants up, if only a little bit. He’s spent nearly $2000 of his own money to kick off the campaign, joining people like President Barack Obama and everyone who is tired of seeing someone else’s goofy underwear.
Here’s hoping it works.
