One of the little reminders of home for United States and NATO forces in Afghanistan are the presence of familiar foods and drinks on big military bases. At the sprawling base at Kandahar, Afghanistan, there’s a lot of western food available: Burger King, Pizza Hut, TGI Friday’s, Tim Hortons, and other Western favorites are there right next to little local shops and businesses. Not anymore, says Command Sgt. Major Michael Hall. When their contracts are up, fast food is getting pulled from Afghanistan.
“This is a war zone — not an amusement park,” Sgt. Maj. Hall wrote in a blog earlier this year. “Supplying nonessential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops who are in the fight each day need resupply with ammunition, food and water.”
The Tim Hortons will stay, thankfully; however, BK, Pizza Hut, TGI Friday’s, Orange Julius, and Dairy Queen are on the outs. Soldiers will still have plenty of fried options from the normal base menu, but that little extra “Have it your way” touch is gone. If it’ll get them home faster, it’s worth the additional discomfort.
