Lisa J. Murphy is a tireless activist for the blind. Having gotten a certification in tactile graphics, she used her training and her skills as a photographer to make picture books for blind children. They’re basically 3D bas-relief images or pop-ups that are shaped like animals, to help blind kids equate the word cat with the animal cat, and the like. However, she realized there’s nothing like that for adults, so she’s created Tactile Mind, the first braille adult book.
The book contains explicit, softcore, HBO-friendly images to go along with the words, which are also braille. While it’s not exactly bookshelf friendly, being 15 centimeters thick when closed, the $225 numbered and signed book is designed to fill a need while still being kind of an interesting artistic display and talking piece. While there’s a Playboy braille edition, that covers the words and not the pictures (so some people apparently do really read the articles!)
Every image takes somewhere between 40 and 50 hours to produce. That’s a single image! The process is quite involved, too, and the work has to be perfect for someone whose fingertip can pick out the slightest mistake. For most people it’s look but don’t touch; in this case it’s touch, but don’t look.
