Haggis is kind of a punchline. It’s possibly the most awful-sounding food product to have ever been invented: the heart, liver, and lungs of a sheep minced with onion, spices, suet, and oatmeal boiled within the sheep’s stomach. You’d think something like that would be well known, but the food website Just Eat commissioned a survey and found some pretty startling results. Some 18 percent of Britons surveyed thought the Haggis was a hilltop-dwelling Scottish animal!
That’s not all. Another 15 percent thought it was a musical instrument. Four percent thought it was a character from the Harry Potter series. Even 14 percent of the Scots surveyed amongst the 1623 people questioned didn’t really know what haggis was, and that’s Scotland’s most famous dish!
However, it’s kind of understandable, thanks to the Wild Haggis myth. You can see what a real fake Wild Haggis looks like above, next to a real, prepared fake haggis.
