Despite the lean economic times, there’s one industry that’s booming, and it’s kind of a surprising one. The lingerie business is doing better than ever, according to merchants, and they put the credit squarely at the feet of the middle-aged and horny. After studying sales figures from October 2009 through April 2010, UK clothier Debenhams says the spike in lingerie sales is attributed directly to what they’re calling the cougar effect: older women in their 40’s and 50’s are buying more lingerie thanks to movies and TV shows glorifying the older woman!
“Positive female role models in this age group such as the women in the Sex and the City movies and Courteney Cox in TV’s Cougar Town are giving the women confidence to splash out on themselves,” said Debenhams head lingerie buyer Annette Warburton. “With women’s 40s being touted as the new 20s, and lingerie designers stepping up to the mark to feed this demand, it’s a market we expect to see grow further in the future.” You go, older girls!
While the news is kind of surprising, it also makes sense. The population in general is getting older, so you’re going to see more cougars in lingerie and more stories involving 52-year-old exotic dancers. I’d imagine lingerie manufacturers are thrilled to see the middle-aged woman embracing her sexy side.
