The Mojave Memorial War Memorial, a 7-foot-tall metal cross in the middle of the Mojave Desert, has been at the center of some serious controversy lately. It was the subject of many lawsuits against its content (a cross) being on federal land in a national park. Recently, to solve the controversy, the Department of the Interior sold the land on which the cross sets to the local VFW in a land-swap deal. It was all for naught as thieves cut the cross down overnight and stole the 75-year-old memorial to the veterans of World War I.
This whole thing is kind of sad. Yes, I can understand separation of church and state and all that, but to waste time and money suing over a war memorial dedicated to WWI veterans that’s been on Sunrise Rock for 75 years? And for someone to go in, after the issue was all settled (kind of) and just steal the whole thing outright? Sometimes I just don’t know what to think about people. Just the act of going out into the desert to steal a giant metal cross is kind of crazy.
