It was supposed to be a solemn affair. Ukranian president Viktor Yanukovych and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev were to go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a war memorial saluting all of the Soviet Union’s WWII dead, in Kiev, Ukraine. Unfortunately for President Yanukovych, nature has a sense of humor. A stray gust of wind caught one of the 8-foot-tall wreaths and knocked it over, right as President Yanukovych was bowing in front of it. The wreath hit him square in the face! English Russia has some incredible shots of the wreath attack; LiveLeak has the whole episode on video.
I have to say, I’m really surprised stuff like this doesn’t happen more often. Everywhere any President of anything goes, there’s a lot of flapping ribbons and giant wreaths and all kinds of stuff just waiting to be thrown around by the wind. Fortunately, nobody was hurt by the rogue plant attack; the only thing damaged was Viktor Yanukovych’s pride.
