Two people who we’ll call James and Maura, both from out of town and visiting friends, meet in a club. In spite of the 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) separating the two of them, they hit it off. After two years of long distance, Maura gets pregnant, and she and James settle down to raise their son together. It’d be a wonderfully romantic situation, except for the fact that the two didn’t know they were brother and sister. James and Maura actually have the same father, but thanks to the legal system, James didn’t find this out until after his son was born!
James became estranged from his mother over the course of the years, until Maura urged him to reconnect with her. During this reconnection and getting-to-know-you process, James’ mother finds out who Maura’s father is. Turns out, Maura’s father is also James’ father, and a family court ruling in the couple’s native Ireland is the reason why James never found out. Now he’s living with his own sister, and is the father to his own nephew thanks to a real-life Chinatown situation.
Creepy, right? Well, it gets a little worse, as James and Maura have vowed to keep their family going! “If someone had said to me that they were in a relationship like this, I would have said they were sickos. When we found out we were half-brother and sister, we were devastated. If we didn’t have a child, we would have left it but we will get married and we will have more children.”
