Stephen Fry is one of the most popular celebrity Tweeters on microblogging website Twitter. The BBC presenter, comedian, and all-around media darling has attracted 1.5 million followers on his Twitter account, and more join every day. That’s why he was the perfect person to judge the Hay Festival’s most beautiful tweet ever tweeted contest! Who would know more about Twitter than an actual user who is actually funny? The winner chosen was Mark MacKenzie, or marcmack, who tweeted the following contest-winning gem: “I believe we can build a better world! Of course, it’ll take a whole lot of rock, water & dirt. Also, not sure where to put it.”
“What I like about it is how my brain works. Occasionally I have these odd thoughts that come to me and they amuse me so I jot them down. I like sharing them and it’s an interesting form to work with,” said MacKenzie, a 41-year-old from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. “A certain percentage of tweets are tired cliche phrases so when they come into my head I think ‘That won’t do.’ I can’t stand triteness so I always look for ridiculousness in trite.”
While it’s not exactly Shakespeare, it is pretty funny. You have to give him that. It’s great use of the feed; I wish I had the energy to turn Popfi’s Twitter account into something other than a news feed!
