One of the things about the march of time is that, eventually, what was once needed will no longer be required. Such is the case with giant public restroom facilities. Once a staple of every large city due to a lack of indoor plumbing, most buildings have since been retrofitted and modernized with toilets and sinks and whatnot, so the use of large-scale public toilets is on the wane, with most of the buildings falling into disrepair or being knocked down for use by other things. Officials in Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department have a plan: they want to turn toilets into trendy outdoor cafes!
In Boston Common, there’s an aging gothic-style public toilet called the Pink House. In Back Bay Fens, there’s a long-closed public facility called the Duck House. Officials want to turn both these facilities from restrooms to restaurants. Would you eat in a re-purposed crapper?
I guess I would; after all, I’m not sure what most of the buildings I eat in used to be before they were restaurants, and as long as it was currently clean and not full of antique toilets, I don’t really care. Just as long as I con’t run into any bathroom ghosts.
