Amazon’s Kindle e-reader has been a huge success, selling millions of copies in its first year. Predictably, Barnes and Noble moved in and launched their own e-reader, the Nook, which has also been successful, though not as much as the Kindle. Yesterday, Barnes and Noble slashed the price of the Nook to $199, so Amazon slashed the price of the Kindle to $189. The e-reader price war has begun!
I love it when a price war breaks out. Everyone sells more, consumers save more, and the only real loser is, well… maybe the traditional publishing industry? Then again, they’re selling digital copies of books without, you know, the expense of printing up books, shipping them to stores, and all the other expenses related to print media. That’s pure profit!
As for independent bookstores? They might be in trouble. Then again, the e-reader market is fairly small compared to overall sales, so there’s plenty of time to sell the store, trash the books, and cash in on the insurance.
