After a very high profile launch, complete with TV advertising blitz, Microsoft has decided that it was time to kick the Kin out of the house. Not actual family guests, just the Kin line of social networking phones, which are being discontinued after only 48 days on the market. Biggest money-loser ever? Perhaps so. Disaster for Microsoft? You bet. Talking like Robert Evans? You know it, baby.
Rumors persist that MS was able to successfully sell only 500 or so of the Kin in the month and a half it was on the market, compared to the 600,000 iPhone 4Gs sold in one day by Apple. As for the Kin team, they’re off to their next spectacular failure of a product: the Windows Phone 7 team. They hope to incorporate some of Kin’s more popular features and improved technology into Microsoft’s generally-flagging mobile phone lines.
Step one: put Android on the phones. Step two: ??? Step three: Profits.
