It isn’t often that I highlight a sad story here at PopFi, but there’s something about the story of Jean Stephens that kind of makes me sad. Ms. Stephens, a 91-year-old woman from Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, was recently captured with the deceased bodies of the two people she loved best in the world, her husband (who died in 1999) and her twin sister (who died in October 2009). She didn’t dig them up for any creepy reason; she was just lonely.
“I think when you put them in the (ground), that’s goodbye, goodbye,” Stevens said. “In this way I could touch her and look at her and talk to her.” She kept her sister in a spare room off the bedroom, on an old couch. Her husband also got a couch, though his was out in the garage. “I’d go in, and I’d talk, and I’d forget. I put glasses on her. When I put the glasses on, it made all the difference in the world. I would fix her up. I’d fix her face up all the time.”
Police haven’t charged her with anything, though there’s still a chance they might. As for the person or persons who dug the bodies up for the 91-year-old, nobody knows and she’s not talking. As for the deceased, they are both resting in the coroner’s office while police see to the unusual grave-robbing.
