All around the Southampton-area village of Portswood, England, things have been coming up missing. At first it was a few little things, but lately it’s been a full-on torrent of disappearing gloves, missing socks, and stolen panties. While most panty raids are fraternity pranks undertaken in college, that’s not the case in Portswood, where the criminal cat burglar is an actual cat named Oscar.
Oscar, age 13, is actually a foster cat in the care of Peter and Birgitt Weismantel via Portsmouth’s Cats Protection adoption effort. Said 72-year-old Peter of his feline filch: “He started bringing socks home a few months ago and then gardening gloves which we tracked to our neighbor. Then we had a situation in which he brought back young women’s underwear. It began to escalate and I telephoned the police as people must have been missing clothes — especially with women’s underwear being taken.”
Of course, Oscar isn’t just stealing to steal, he’s actually stealing out of love for his new family. “He brings them back as presents,” Birgitt says. “We can’t give him back now as he makes such an effort with all these gifts. He’s got a lovely personality and is a very loving cat.” She added, “I think we fell in love with him before he started taking all these things. It was just so touching to see him come home every day with something for us.”
